The Women’s Authority in the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria Issues a Statement on World Suicide Prevention Day

On Wednesday, the Women’s Authority in the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria issued a statement on World Suicide Prevention Day. The text of the statement reads as follows:

September 10th of each year marks World Suicide Prevention Day. Suicide is one of the most dangerous social, psychological, and health phenomena, creating profound imbalances in the structure of societies. This is a result of the complex accumulation of factors in all aspects of life, including internal conflicts and external pressures, which in turn lead to feelings of helplessness, a lack of opportunities to escape suffering, and a loss of hope in life. On this day, we declare our solidarity with all countries of the world, which stand together in a common humanitarian stance to remind people of the seriousness of the painful phenomenon of suicide, which claims the lives of hundreds of thousands annually. Women are among those who live in a state of hidden tragedy, especially in light of the circumstances of war and displacement. This makes them the primary victims and the weakest link in the face of the accumulating burdens and difficulties that have weighed them down and continue to hinder the achievement of a just and shared life.
What we are witnessing today in terms of murders and the escalation of suicides among all age groups, which is tearing apart the social and human fabric, and deepening the structural crises that have led to the dismantling of the core of Syrian society and its ancient authenticity. Therefore, we, in the Women’s Authority in the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, based on our humanitarian and moral responsibility, and based on the principles of the democratic nation and relevant international laws, declare our categorical rejection of the escalation of the phenomena of femicide and suicide in societies, as they represent a flagrant violation of human rights. We also affirm our continued commitment on this day to the sanctity of life, the right of every human being to live with dignity and security, and to spread the culture of awareness, dialogue and social cohesion in order to revive hope and care for mental health. We also call on the World Health Organization and all concerned parties to stop all forms of violence and killing against women and youth to protect them and guarantee their rights, and the necessity of providing psychological, social and economic support to build a safer, more aware and more compassionate society where justice and equality prevail, free of suicide.

Together for a free life full of hope
